Author Notes:
1: I DO NOT own Once Upon a Time, it's characters, or storyline. Once Upon a Time, story and characters, is owned by both Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. I DO own Eiry Meagher, her story, and the art for this story - be it commissioned or my own.
2: Bold-italic phrases will indicate Eiry's thoughts or the thoughts of others while in their point of view. Italic-underlined phrases will indicate when the Spirits of Neverland are making contact with someone. Anytime you see "()" it will indicate when Eiry is reliving a memory. When you see "..." it means the point-of-view has shifted to another character.
3: The song for this chapter is "99 Times" by Kate Voegele. The song Rie sings is "Under Pressure" covered by P!NK, originally by QUEEN and David Bowie, for the Happy Feet 2 soundtrack.

16. The Pressure of Bravery

***
These things are so typical. These things are unforgivable. I'm gone and you're invisible, [now]. Don't let me catch you followin' [me]. Don't ask 'cause I'm not offering. [You've] caused enough of my suffering [for too long]!
***

Why do things like this always have to happen to me? I wondered mentally, opening my eyes slowly. As I sat up, I felt a cold cloth fall into my lap. "Well, it's nice to see you're conscious again, dear." Came an unfamiliar woman's voice. I lifted my gaze and saw my adopted mother's hired midwife, Zelena. A gentle smile graced her lips. "I found you unconscious in the woods, not far from here. You were being carried by one of the Wicked Witch's flying monkeys." I nodded my head again, however I had to clench my eyes shut. A migraine had hit me. Why the Hell is this happening?! "Here you go." Zelena grabbed my hand and placed a glass of, what I would assume was water in it.

"Thanks..." I muttered as I took a sip from it. After I finished the water, I brought my gaze back to the older woman. "You know, you didn't have to stick around..." Yes, I am being kind to her, but I still don't trust her. I owe it to Snow to be civil until the truth about her is revealed - whatever the truth may be. Zelena shook her head, her smile growing ever-so-slightly.

"It's the least I could do. A young lady should never be left to wander alone. Besides, I'd hate to see another flying monkey target you." She informed as she stole a glance outside the window, a distant look painting her face. Moments of silence passed before Zelena decided to speak up. "I hope I'm not prying, but how exactly do you and the Charmings' know each other?" Asked the strange woman as a smile danced across her lips once more. My eyes briefly escaped from her form and peered outside as snow began to gently fall. A sigh escaped my lips, readying to go through the explanation, as my anxiety began to slowly build. However I did my best to hide it. I guess there's no harm in telling her...

"My biological mother died, just after naming me in the hospital. I was put into the foster care system as soon as the papers were drawn up. Immediately, I was fostered by a family of nine, the Bensons, adding me as their tenth member. Danielle, my foster mother, wasn't fertile and had always wanted a baby girl. Riley, my foster father, gave her that wish by allowing them to foster me, regardless of how much he hated the idea of having a little girl in the house - he wanted 'tough' strong boys to carry on his legacies..." I drew a solemn breath. "It was a constant argument, whether or not to return me, after I had turned six years old. Riley, and my eight older brothers, couldn't care any less about my being there. Danielle was my only salvation. My heart and my strength." My chest grew heavy as tears threatened to gather. The past is in the past. Danielle would want me to let go. "A month prior to my thirteenth birthday, Danielle got hit with a terminal cancer handed down to her by the generations before her. Regardless of how ill and weak she was, Riley would still argue with her, getting drunk in the process, but she would never back down. It was now eight days before my teen years would begin, and she had left me. My brothers would part-take in mind-numbing extra curricular events. Riley would continue to drink until he could not stay awake." This whole time Zelena had never batted an eyelash. However, every time I mentioned Riley's name, her eyes would darken. "Me, I remained a girl - I cried and shut the world out during my grieving process." My chest went from feeling heavy to growing tight as air struggled to leave my lungs. I had never told anyone other than Snow and David about my past. My eyes fell to my hands. "On the morning of my thirteenth birthday, Riley was once again intoxicated, so much so he struggled to stand. He blamed me for his marital problems with Danielle, that if I hadn't been fostered in the first place, Danielle would still be alive." Zelena's eyes became fierce. It would seem my hostess doesn't like him... Mind you the Charmings and Rumple didn't take much of a liking to him either.

"He didn't hurt you, did he?" She asked through gritted teeth. A bittersweet smile painted my lips.

"Yes, but it didn't end there..." A heavy sigh left my lips. This is the part I hate telling the most... "From violence came - he tried to..." I bit my lip hard enough to form a minor bruise. "Rape me." It kind of felt nice to clear the air. "After I ran away from my foster home, I found that I had somehow came across a wormhole - an invisible portal - which had brought me to the Enchanted Forest. After wandering aimlessly, I came to a dirt road and was almost trampled by a horse. Snow's horse. David came riding up, after realizing that Snow had stopped riding - she had done so because she was worried about me and my well-being. At first, David didn't trust me, he thought that I was a pawn sent by Regina to lower Snow White's defenses. To earn her trust and then break her. They argued briefly before I made a proposition. A test. If I stayed with them for three months, and gave them any kind of reason to doubt me, I would leave their kingdom and never return. If I had proven myself to be who I claimed, they would allow me to stay in their kingdom." I smiled as the memory played in my head. "They accepted my offer and, a week later, David accepted me. Trusted me. It was then that Snow had managed to convince David to welcome me to be part of their family. So, the simple way of answering your question is: I am their first daughter. Adopted but loved just as much as my sister." I mentioned drawing my gaze back to the red-headed woman. She nodded her head, accepting my explanation, causing her orange-red hair to bounce. "I'm Rie Meagher, by the way." I extended my hand to show respect. She chuckled lightly as her eyes had finally lightened up.

"I'm sorry, how silly of me not to say it sooner, I'm Zelena." Her lips curved once more into a smile, this one proving to be a little more authentic than the one I saw in Granny's. "I will be midwifing for your mother, as you may well know." I nodded and smiled once more. "Snow White has proven, time and time again, that she is an incredibly lucky woman." Zelena muttered. I tilted my head to the right, sending her a questioning look. She chuckled briefly. "She has quite the family."

"Without Snow, I would have been in Neverland, and married to Peter Pan, that much sooner." I uttered looking back down to my hands. I will have become just like one of his Lost Boys. An almost thoughtless drone, committed to fulfilling his every desire. A shudder had shaken my body at the very thought. When I lifted my gaze, I noticed that Zelena's face had paled ever-so-slightly. She quickly recovered only to look from me to the clock on her wall.

"I hate to do this, Rie, but I need to go somewhere. You should try to rest more." She grabbed her coat and threw it over her body. I arched a brow but nodded. It's not worth questioning. Not right now. Zelena sent me a small wave and then left me alone in her place. Quite some time had passed and I realized that my body was restless. I decided to get up off the couch and left the house. I wandered the area, taking in my surroundings as they burned into my memory. My body came to a halt when I found myself standing in front of cellar. A cold wind licked at my body. The lock on the door had been left unlocked. I bit my lip in debate. Should I really be snooping around? I mean I know I don't trust the lady, but still... I took a deep breath and decided to go for it. I removed the lock from the bars and opened the door wide enough to allow my form to enter. As I slowly made my way down the stairs I heard a familiar voice begin to mutter things I couldn't quite make out. Rumple. Anxiety filled my essence.

"Why can't you leave me be, Zelena?" His voice wondered. Zelena...? I finally made it to the bottom of the staircase. A faint fire's light flicked in the back corner. I could barely make out his form.

"R... Rumple?" My voice cracked. The man lifted his head, from facing the ground, and stared at me. His face was clean-shaven. His brown eyes pierced me like a dagger. My chest grew tight as tears gathered in my eyes. I slowly approached the barred cage only to have my legs give out beneath me. The tears began to fall. "It really is you..." Rumpelstiltskin, the man who had saved my life in more than one way, was alive. He got up from the stool he was sitting on and approached me, only to stop at the wall of bars and crouch down.

"Eiry..." His voice murmured. He outstretched his hand and placed it on my face. "He's gone." My eyes locked with his in curiosity. "Bae..." My eyes grew wide.

"No... Who would kill Baelfire?" I felt Rumple's pain through his touch. I felt his heart breaking, all his sorrow.

"Zelena." What does Zelena have to do with this? Then it hit me. Zelena is the Wicked Witch! I grit my teeth as his sorrow fueled my rage.

"Why don't you fight her?" I wondered as I placed my hand on top of his. It was at this time, Rumple tore his gaze from mine.

"She holds my dagger." My eyes widened. Whosoever holds the dagger, controls the Dark One... He drew a breath to calm himself, though it wasn't proving too useful. "It's not safe here, you need to leave." Not gonna happen. I just got here. I shook my head instantly.

"You saved me, now I want to save you." His eyes darkened as he glared at me. I know he wasn't doing it out of spite, but I still felt it's intensity.

"She WILL kill you if you get in her way. What's worse is that she will get me to do it." His eyes softened. "I let you die once, Eiry, I won't let it happen again." With a wave of his hand, red smoke surrounded me, and I found myself in Snow's apartment. Rumple... The apartment was empty. I was alone. I sat on the couch and cradled my legs in my arms.

"'Cause love's such an old fashioned word and love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the night." I looked out of the window towards the evening-to-night sky, as snow began to fall delicately from the gathering clouds. "And loves dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves... This is our last dance, this is our last dance, this is ourselves." A breath left my lips as I watched the snow fall. I don't know what you're planning Zelena, but I won't let you succeed.
